The
Imbali Story
In the early 80’s Helga Filter,
after recognising their hidden talents, started training some of the Zulu
women on the farm “Wagendrift” to do embroidery and started the Imbali
Handcraft Project.
This
is a job creation project based on the “Wagendrift” Farm (Dusk to Dawn
Guesthouse) in the southern part of Mpumalanga, South Africa, offering
a form of income for otherwise unemployed Zulu women living on the farm.
Imbali
makes and embroiders tablecloths, serviettes, runners, place mats, tray
cloths, t-shirts and duvet covers. Customers can choose from the many different
designs or choose their own and have table cloths, etc. made in any size,
shape or colour.
The name Imbali has become
widely known in the crafter fraternity for its colourful designs and exquisite
hand-embroidery. Because of its uniqueness, many of the crafts find their
way overseas making ideal gifts to take home or for people to send to relatives
and friends.
In this way the product ends
up in the hands and hearts of those who appreciate hand-embroidered linen,
as machine embroidery just does not compare!
Imbali
products are available in the craft shop at the Dusk
to Dawn Guesthouse
and can be ordered from
dtd@ptr.dorea.co.za.
